10 Ways to Save on your Gas Bills

Making the most of your energy dollar is especially important during the cold winter months. Use these 10 tips, from, to enjoy lower gas bills all season long.

  1. Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable. Each degree you raise your thermostat, your bill increases 3%.
  2. Clean/replace furnace filters once a month. This could increase your furnace efficiency up to 10%.
  3. Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed. Make sure vents are not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes.
  4. Bleed trapped air from hot-water radiators once or twice a season. If unsure how to perform this task, call a professional.
  5. Use kitchen, bath, and other ventilating fans wisely; in just 1 hour, these fans can pull out an entire houseful of warm air. Try to keep humidity in the house between 30 and 60 percent.
  6. Keep draperies and shades on the south facing windows open during the day, and closed at night.
  7. Close unoccupied rooms, which are isolated from the rest of the house.
  8. Consider installing double-pane windows. If this isn’t an option, invest in a plastic film to cover windows. At a cost of 4-6 dollars you can reduce heat lost through windows up to 50%.
  9. Caulk and weather strip around exterior seams, cracks, and openings.
  10.  Keep garage doors, patios, and other gateways to the outside, closed up as often as possible to cut down on amount of warm air lost.
